Aliens versus Humans App Reviews

Unpredictable combat

Aliens can shoot through walls, you cant. Throwing grenades is a coin flip. You can be out in open fields (no obstruction in any height level) and the grenade might drop right in front of you (even for the most accurate soldiers). You shoot an alien in the back, he shoots you back instantly and kills you. Many other annoying details like this during combat, that make the constant saving and loading unavoidable.Non-combat aspects of the game are great.

Much like the original

Great game, great app support/updates

Great game!

I purchased this a long time ago and am still loving it. Replay value is great. Nostalgic value is great. Support by the tiny development team is great. My only complaint would be that the latest update requires a different iOS from the one when I purchased AvH. But I can and will continue to play the previous version for a long time.

Very good "Xcom" Tribute.

Before the IOS port Release of Xcom This was THE only Xcom type game available in the App Store. Loving crafted by a two person Husband-Wife team, this games only real shortcoming is the lack of attention its received. Having been regularly updated with content for over two years so far, AvH is a true gem for anyone who loves classic Xcom.

Great

Ok like I said first I want to say.....THIS GAME IS SWEET.but an update needs to come I thing It should be more like x-com like draging or wepons in to your backpack or put it into your left/right hand so please make it more like x-com and this update is good but please and this in the next update please. :)

Close to XCom but far less enjoyable

Summary: This game would really be great if the peons werent instagib supersnipers and the enemies were more thoughtfully conceptualized. This game is so close to XCom youre better off reading a review on that to get the gist of how it plays. The developers surely worked their tails off making it. But they really failed in making it a fun game. The enemies arent interesting at all; they are generally homologues to your own troops. The one unique enemy, the lowest tier as well: a slimeball that slings acid blobs at you, is incredibly accurate at range and quickly upgrades to an instakill weapon. While the mechanics are there for a good XCOM clone, the theme and immersion fall very short.

Classic X-Com in All Its Glorious Glory

I loved the game as a kid. This game is everything I had hoped. Including the nearly iPad Throw inducing random critical hit from an alien smugly hiding in the shadows (you can see the smug on his green, featureless face). Who can forget being gunned down by friendly fire as Kilwoski finally snaps and rage-quits your squad while yelling "Game Over Man! Game Over!" Ok, the game is retro in appearance, however the gameplay is every bit the equal of, and likely surpasses, its modern counterparts. Just game (no IAP at the time of this review), and I keep coming back to, second only to Star Base Orion, in my go-to library. Wonderful game. Responsive company.

OG XCOM at its finest

If I didnt know better I would say this game was created by microprose themselves. The art design of the aliens is not as unique as the original, but the game plays exactly like the original game we all loved. Its a shame how underrated this game is, it truly is masterpiece of fandom and I am grateful for the dedication the developer put into providing us with this nostalgic experiance on the mobile platform.

Weak

Save your money and buy xcom.

X-COM:UFO Defense

While this is not the original, it is as close as we will ever get as Firaxis may not be able, or willing for that matter, to port X-COM:UFO Defense to the iOS. Changes needed made: Ability to demolish rooms from base Ability to load research without scientists More to follow as I play more.

Few missing things

I would like to see interceptions, enemy bases and Xcom base deffence. I would also like to see more enemy types and facilities the game enemies are also way more powerful than your troops.

OK

Its OK, but I would like resilient armor to not be made out of mech corpses(ITS REALLY ANNOYING WHEN YOU HAVE TO FACE ONE-SHOT-ONE-KILL PLASMA AND ENERGY WEAPONRY).

Rewarding Turn-Based Strategy

This game feels like the original X-Com from 1994, and I am having a blast playing it. Im not entirely sure how much of my enjoyment of this game is due to nostalgia, but I dont care. The turn-based combat is brutal - especially when compared to titles with a more modern aesthetic. But surviving those difficult battles is part of the fun. I definitely recommend this game.

Pretty good, well worth price

This is lacking in some aspects of XCOM UFO Defense, such as air combat, base assaults, terror missions with civvies running around, some grenade features, but for the most part its a pretty good port for the low price. They are working on another related version with multiplayer (Im in the beta), and that is quite a lot of fun too.

Awesome App

This is one addictive app! Ive really enjoyed the Onslaught update that really has the feel of the old x-com game. If you liked x-com you will love AvH.

Fun but a little shallow

I was so excited to find this game since I was feeling nostalgic for the original X-COM game. And this is a good fun imitation that works fairly well on my IPad. However, its a little buggy, with bad physics programming in many situations (try standing up and throwing a grenade over a waist-high picket fence). The biggest shortcoming, though, is that it just isnt as deep as the original. The old PC game was spooky and scary due to the plot (when the aliens start abducting your marines and playing mind control games on them, for example), but even the 2.0 version of AvH doesnt really have a plot. Its just one fight after another, with no sense that the aliens are improving at the same time the humans are. I still enjoyed it quite a bit and recommend this game. But its very shallow.

Respect the aliens

Fun, suspenseful, open framework, good balance. Nice game

Cant play

Not worth the 3 bucks. Can only play the campaign for 6 months(game time) before it says you lost funding and shuts you down.

Excellent!

I played the original X-com and find that this is as much fun, and its great to be able to play it anywhere on the iPad mini..!

Get your X-COM FIX!

The tech tree is to small and the ending a bit anticlimactic. The graphics and some of the gameplay has been simplified, but its still fun to kill aliens, do an autopsy on them, and then sell their corpse for money! Do the under water one next! :-)
